Ahoy!

First:  Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day!  Yarrr!

Unrelated to pirates (bummer, I know), but every week I do a trivia question on my white board at work.  This week’s was about New Wave one-hit wonders and it stumped nearly everyone.  This surprised and saddened me – these aren’t terribly obscure songs.  Maybe it was the videos?  Some of them you want to block out, for sure.  😉  So, to help the general public (or, at least my 6 faithful readers – I gained 2!) with their New Wave trivia knowledge, here are the songs featured in the trivia.

Warning: These videos are super, duper dated and fascinating (and occasionally disturbing).  If the music videos of ’80s were the only thing that remained as an artifact of that decade, what would the future people think?

“Tainted Love” by Soft Cell (I cannot explain this video.  At all.  Just focus on the song)

To cleanse the palate after that, check out the excellent Marilyn Manson cover (Alert: Adult content as only Marilyn could and/or would.  Also: 2001 :|)

“I Melt With You” by Modern English.

“You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” by Dead or Alive Remember the cover in The Wedding Singer?

“Relax” by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.  This song will forever remind me of Zoolander.

“Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles
.  Famous mostly for being the first video aired on MTV back on August 1, 1981.

You have also probably noticed a change (yet again) in the look o’ the blog.  I’m shooting for something a little more multi-functional because there will soon be a listening section!  I want to spread the love a bit and share what I’m rocking out to. Hopefully you’ll enjoy.  🙂

Click on the “Listen” menu on the left hand side of your screen (mobile users, use the little drop menu thing.  Yep, we’re fancy now).  It is still under construction (only Spotify is up, kinda), but the end goal will be to have both Spotify playlists and YouTube playlists featuring Classical and Rock (currently everything that is “not” classical – someday we may be more detailed).  They are split into “New” (released or New To Me in the last year) and “Favorites” (everything else).  I’ll try to make sure there isn’t any overlap of specific songs, though some songs bear repeating.  😀

And, to send you off on your way, some new (and new to me )music:

The new Black Veil Brides song, “Faithless”.  So heavy and a return to form.  Bob Rock produced the album (the succinctly titled BVB4) and I’m eager to hear it all.  It comes out the same day I’m seeing them again: October 27th!

A coworker turned me on to Vintage Trouble yesterday.  It is retro done right and simply a darn good time.  A taste:  “Pelvis Pusher” from last year’s The Bomb Shelter Sessions Encore Edition.

P!nk
has a new side thing going: You + Me.  I love her voice – she is one of my favorite female vocalists (see, you never know what will show up here!).  She has teamed up with Dallas Green from City and Colour on an album of duets.  While the folk/Americana/singer-songwriter thing is ubiquitous currently, the first single, “You and Me”, is well done and I’m digging it! Their voices go really well together – his clean and her rougher-edged and more emotive – and Ms. Moore is given a chance to shine with that awesome voice.  The full album, Rose Ave., drops October 14th.

Lastly, this video has been out for a bit now, but I can’t stop watching the darn thing.  Avenged Sevenfold‘s video for “This Means War” is one of the best live promo videos I’ve seen in years.  And it so freaking metal!  \m/

Now go forth and enjoy what remains of today like a pirate!  Just don’t end up like this at the end:

As always:  Enjoy your music responsibly.  Buy it or stream it, don’t steal it!
